June 3: A Mix of Fun and Work

I slept late this morning.  No idea why.  I went to bed early last night and slept right away and then I slept a solid eleven hours.  I must have needed it, but I wasn't feeling overly tired.  Just naturally tired.  I'm not complaining.  I'll take sleep over not sleeping any night.

I decided to keep our breakfast simple.  Frozen French Toast came out and went into the toaster oven.

Oh!  Yesterday I made an impulse buy.  Mind you this sort of purchase for me is not truly impulsive.  It's usually something I've thought about for a good long while and priced periodically and looked at and thought about all over again.  I ordered a Toaster Oven/Air fryer combination oven that was on a deep clearance.  I saved about 58% and got free shipping on it.  There's nothing wrong with my current toaster oven mind you except I've noted it's a little slower to heat things.  I've had this little Sunbeam toaster oven now for years and it's been a wonderful little thing, but yes, I've noticed it's a little slower to toast, a little slower to thaw frozen foods.

But John has mentioned many times that he'd like us to have an air fryer.  I hemmed and hawed having thought more about a deep fryer, but I could see the sound reasoning about the air fryer.  Less oil, less mess overall.  The idea of adding still another appliance to the countertop didn't appeal.  I told him that I'd get one when our current toaster oven was dead.  Well, it's not quite dead, but it is slowing down.  So yeah, I saw this combination toaster oven/air fryer and it was at a price point I could afford, a brand I trust, and I popped it in the cart and ordered it.  So, an impulse that was a long time in being impulsive.

Anyway, breakfast got made and eaten.  I honestly planned to go outdoors and work again this morning but between sleeping late, and puttering around indoors, it turned 11am.  I thought it's not really too late, but the Air Conditioner turned on and I knew that it was very warm by that point.  I decided then that I was not going out today, at least not this morning.

I puttered around the house some more until I was too warm and then sat down and cooled off over genealogy sheets.  I am very close to being done with this notebook. I entered information for three relatives.  Unfortunately, I'm not taking these last ones in the order I which I have them in the notebook. But I am nearing the end, with less than 8 family members to go.  And then, I'm promising myself a break of two weeks or more before starting the paternal family lines.

John asked for the Marinated Ham Sandwiches a couple of weeks ago.  That's why I cooked that nice thick ham steak yesterday.  I pulled the slider buns from the freezer last night and set them out to thaw.  I haven't made these sandwiches in a long time.  I think I mentioned a few weeks ago that I looked at Hawaiian sweet rolls at the discount grocery and was shocked at the cost of $7 for a package of 12 buns.  I can't even recall where I picked these slider buns up, but they are a little larger and less sweet than Hawaiian rolls.  I'll confess now that I am not fond of Hawaiian rolls.  I love pineapple, pineapple juice, sherbert, but rolls...Nope.

The nicest thing about making these today was that it took all the rest of that ham, and I was able to put several sandwiches in the freezer, which are always nice to have on hand.

I have puttered in the house some more.  Plan to go tackle another person's pages in the notebook.  And try to figure out what in the world I want to do with the chicken breast I took out last night to thaw.  And what the sides will be when I do decide... But first, it's time to have some coffee.

Sounds like the Toaster Oven/Air fryer oven was just the thing you needed. Your other toaster oven seemed to be on its last legs. Air fryers are better than a lot of grease and oil to make a mess and sit heavy in the belly. Smart shopping!

I'm curious... When you freeze sandwiches, do you thaw them and serve or pop them the oven to warm frozen. I've never frozen sandwiches, but I can see that it would be convenient.

I have been thinking of a combo toaster oven/air fryer for a while now. After you use your new one, please post how you like it !

I resisted the air fryer for ages too, but my teenage son convinced me and now I LOVE it. I use it for everything and it's the only thing I have ever used that reheats french fries to crispy (a very important matter to teenage boys ;)

We also have a combo air fryer/toaster oven and love it. Along with cooking and reheating, I use it as a toaster as well. The grandkids all know how to use the air fryer here and at home, where they have a different kind, so they can make their own food when needed.

We have a toaster oven/air fryer combo as well and I use it just about daily - I use to to air fry, toast, bake, proof dough, my husband can reheat pizza on his own. It’s a great little workhorse. We bought one that’s big enough to put an entire pizza or 9x13 pan in. I use it way more than my big oven and it keeps things so much less hot in summer.

Wendi, I've found with sandwiches if they are frozen it's best to thaw and then reheat, especially if you're trying to heat in a microwave. I have never made sandwiches for the freezer that weren't meant to be served hot. Jamerril Stewart on youtube makes and freezes cheese or peanut butter jelly sandwiches for her kids and she just takes out a bunch to thaw and then serves them.

I really like my new toaster oven/air fryer. It's also a convection oven or standard oven. I got the Cuisinart Toaster Oven/Air Fryer combination. It was just barely less than $100 but is much larger and much fancier than my previous little Black and Decker Toaster Oven. I've used ALL the functions on the machine and I'm pleased. I use it every day just now.

Yes, Karla. I think mine puts out even less heat than the little toaster oven did. I mean sure it gets hot but the exterior doesn't warm up as much and the built in fan seems to help a lot.
