Quick Modern Makeup Tutorial

Makeup has come a long way since Avon used to 'call' on us ladies hasn't it?

About a year or so ago, I started reading ads for BB and CC creams.  I was completely confused.  What on earth were these and why were they being introduced?  Then one of my girls gave me a sample bottle of Micellar water...What on earth is this?!

The face of cosmetics is changing, let there be no doubt.  What does that mean to you and I who are fairly accustomed to simple terms like foundation, lipstick and powder?  How about a brief tutorial?

Micellar Water:  Micellar water is made up of micelles, tiny oil molecules suspended in soft water.   It is beneficial for all skin types, from oily, dry to sensitive.  The micelles actually surround dirt and grime and gently cleanses the skin without drying it out.  It is not a makeup remover, unless you buy the sort that I have which specifically states it is a makeup remover.  Micellar water does not completely dissolve foundation nor will it remove mascara.  You should use a specialized remover for that.

Tinted Moisturizer:  Gives sheer color coverage with moisturizing benefits.   These are fast becoming a product of the past.

BB creams: The BB stands for Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm.   The product was developed in the 1960's by a German dermatologist and in the 1980's became extremely popular in Asia.

BB cream is creamier than tinted moisturizer, has lighter coverage than foundation, imparts a matte finish  and often has a sun screen built in.  It is a good substitute for a foundation if you're looking for a lighter than usual makeup routine or simply want something to wear on a daily basis.

There are different benefits from different brands.  Some detoxify, some lend a deeper moisturizer to skin, some have a collagen peptide.  You purchase based on your skin's need.

CC Cream:  Color Corrective creams contain light diffused particles that are good for masking sallow or red complexions.  CC creams tend to have a whipped creamy texture, lighter than that of BB creams.

While BB creams and CC creams are different and marketed for different purposes, many experts feel they are practically interchangeable.  It's truly a matter of what feels good on your skin and gives you the coverage that you want.

Are these two creams the end of foundation as we know it?  Probably not.  BB and CC cream come in extremely limited color ranges, while foundations often cover the full gamut of various skin colors.  In the end, it's which product best suits you and which you most prefer.

Bronzer:  Bronzer is pretty much what it looks like.  A powder that has light reflecting abilities and gives the skin a suntan glow.

Primer:  Primer is used as a base for makeup.  It helps makeup to set and prevents 'sliding' or movement especially in warm weather and gives it the ability to last longer.  Personally, I tend to mix my choice of foundation and primer to make a sheer tint of coverage for my face.

I hope that this quick little tutorial clears up some of the mystery of modern day cosmetics for you and just maybe simplifies or enhances your routine.

One thing my father did for me that has saved me a lot of time and money is to ask me, "Does your brother feel like he has to wear makeup to attract a man or feel better about himself? No. Then why do you? Cosmetics are capitalism that you wear on your face." When I went to college I tried wearing makeup for a while, in rebellion, but gave it up after a few weeks. My father and my mother were raised in Russia, before commercialism hit the country. No make up, no shaving legs, no slaving to fashion, and they passed those values on to us. I don't wear makeup and I don't dye my hair and I don't shave my legs. After 36 years of marriage, my husband would fall over dead if I came out of the bathroom all dolled up. And when I think of all the money I have saved, I am thankful. I am the only one among my friends who lives like this and we no longer try to convert each other to wearing makeup/not wearing makeup.

Thank you for this information. I knew abut nothing about any of it!! I may never wear any of it but I like to at least be able to know a bit about it! :-) My grandchildren seem to know All about it !! Things everywhere are getting to complicated. LOL I am glad I am not just starting out in life and have to keep up with all the supposed improvements. In the world, tech and even makeup . ;)))

I used to wear some makeup when I was young but now I only wear a bit of blush and maybe some Vaseline on my lips. My husband thinks that when you get older you are trying to recapture that look of youth and vitality so you wear makeup. So why he asks, do so many naturally beautiful young ladies wear so much makeup when they are already young and have the look naturally the older are trying to achieve ? LOL They are pretty without any makeup. He feels they are covering up their own beauty. Now that I AM much much older than the young makeup might enhance... ??

Funny thing is out of all my sisters when I was in my 20s I was the one that enjoyed makeup. Now I am the only one who basically wears none. LOL Sarah

I actually use a Micellar water that IS a makeup remover and DOES take off foundation and mascara. It's the Garnier Fructis brand but make sure it says "removes waterproof makeup". It's amazing! It's a great first step before using cleanser.

I've wanted so much to find a BB or CC cream that would work for me but still haven't - my skin is still too oily for that or for those creamy products. Even in winter.

Thanks for this quick little post! I love it.

I love the Garnier Fructis Micellar Water. I too am using it to remove my makeup at night. It makes mascara removal really easy and then I follow up with a nice hot washcloth. Love that routine at night. :)
