The Homemaker Plans Her Week: At Home Week

The hectic days of February are past me.   This week is mine to fully claim for my home and I'm looking forward to it.  The days behind me are a complete blur and that's the truth.  We've had a different sort of month with many appointments and places we needed to be and added in activities, but now we're settling down to a more acceptable pace.  I enjoyed the busyness that was different than my usual busyness, but I do miss being at home!  Do you feel the same?

Work:

I'm beginning to rethink my Zone work schedule and what I mean to accomplish with it.  You'll hear more about that in a new post this week.  In the meantime, this week is officially Zone 3/Beds and BathsWhile the master bedroom needs to be dusted and the floors should be deep vacuumed (under furniture, along the baseboard) and dusted, the master bedroom and bath are not in too poor a shape.  I wish I could say the same for the guest area. I really need to concentrate in those two spaces this week.

I'm going to be tweaking my routine housekeeping, too.  Oh, there are changes afoot!  Without a constant child companion, I feel I can finally begin to accomplish a little more in the home and I plan to try.  Right now, Millie is usually here only about 1 morning a week, so she's not a hindrance.  Some of my work will be done on paper, so lists will be made.  There is much to seriously contemplate.

Canning.  I'm going to put this task down in the kitchen section, too.  I'm determined to learn to use this pressure canner.  I was disappointed that I had more activity than I'd planned on last week which meant not getting anywhere near this task.

And I'll live work at this, because routine housekeeping, meals, the unplanned and unexpected things are bound to occur.

Kitchen:

Canning.

We've plenty of sweets in the house and in the freezers so I don't feel the need to make anything to snack on, but I would like to make some rolls/buns for the freezer, need to refresh our supply of bagels, wouldn't mind having a pizza dough or two in the freezer.

Make out a more comprehensive shopping list for the new month.  I may still be in pantry/freezer mode here for February but I'm out of a few items that I want to restock.  I know I'm getting low on flour and sugar.  For those of you who had great sales to stock up on both items this past Christmas, those items never went on sale here in my area, so I didn't run out to stock up then.  I figured I'd use what I have and then I'd replenish.

Meals:

This week will look shorter on the menu side because it is.  I only have to be concerned with two breakfasts all weekend long.  Every other meal will be takeout (Saturday lunch/supper) or out of the house.   So my official menu for this week will begin on Monday.

Black Beans and Rice, Pico de Gallo, Green Salad, Tortillas

Pork Chops, Scalloped Potatoes, Broccoli and Apple Salad

Spaghetti with Meat Balls, Italian Salad, Garlic Bread.  While I'm at it I'll make up a batch of meatballs for the freezer and spaghetti sauce for the freezer, too.  It's only a little more effort but it's nice to have on hand.

White Chicken Enchiladas, Leftover beans and rice, Tomato and Lettuce salad

Beef Stew, Coleslaw, Corn bread Muffins

Gathered fragments this week:

Butternut Squash

Broccoli florets

Spinach leaves

Oranges

Strawberry Cupcakes (I'm planning to take these to Katie's for Sunday dinner)

Yogurt (I can use this as a sour cream substitute and could make yogurt cheese with it(

About half a gallon of milk

Personal/Leisure:

I've bored myself to tears of late with games on the computer.  Yes, I want to stop spending so much time on the computer but everything else just seemingly took too much effort last week.  This week I'm going to make up a schedule of things to do each evening besides sit staring at the computer screen.

Mani/Pedi.

Go out with Mama one day this week.

Watch "Chocolat".  It occurred to me that the bulk of this movie took place during Lent and I thought it would be fun to watch it once again.  And because Lent is something I know little about, I'm going to study up on that, too.  No, one hasn't a real thing to do with the other, but it's just a fun little way to learn something new.

I quit freezing pizza crust when I started using Tightwad Gazzette's recipe and can have it made and ready for pan by time to oven has preheated. I do precook sausage and bag it in sandwich bags then freezer bag and predice the pepperoni (no longer use slices as it uses more than diced).
FAR FAR behind on home blessings and routines.

This refers to a different post but I was sort of happy to see that you struggle with cussing because I do, too. I console myself that I have never sworn at someone, but I swear up a storm when the computer is acting up or I drop something glass and have a huge clean up job, and so on. It is a hideous habit and while I have tamed it some, I still revert to it when completely frustrated or annoyed. It is also embarrassing because I am married to a non-swearer, so it is not like he is giving a bad example.

I give up chocolate and meat for Lent. I no longer practice any religion but I appreciate the discipline of Lent. I know some argue that it is better to do things for Lent, like volunteer work during Lent, but I find it sort of cleansing to eliminate things I love because it reminds me every day of how blessed I am compared to so many others.

I love the picture of the lady at the fridge; I wish I were that composed in the kitchen...
I turned in a freelance assignment Friday, and worked on our taxes for the accountant on Sunday and today. Hubby had ophthalmic shingles for the past few weeks, so it has been very hectic, and like you, I am happy to get these things off my plate and get back to homemaking.
I worked as a paramedic for decades, mostly with men, so I can speak "salty" with the best of them (mostly when I needed to make one of the young ones do something). It has been a pleasure, but a struggle, to clean up my language, but it is worth it. You are not alone :)

Juls, I'll have to look at my Tightwad Gazette and see the recipe. Thanks for letting me know. Generally I make it fresh but I do like to take a ball out and toss in the fridge to thaw and then let it rise at room temperature now and then.

Mable, I think often of Juls mom saying things like 'Urinate!' and that makes me laugh. I've done fair. There are days I go along all day long and I don't say a thing and then I'll have a day that just somehow everything I go to say has a curse word. WHY? No clue. But I mean to work on it and try to make it not a habit.

When we do the fast in January (3 weeks) I always look for ways to give up things that will 'bite' me a little so that I'm mindful that there is a reason why I'm NOT eating or drinking or doing something. I don't know if 'doing' is the point of Lent or if it's denial (which is the point of fasting). When we are faced with that which we've chosen to deny it reminds us the reason why we have chosen that denial and hopefully that leads to meditation and prayer over situations/circumstances that led us to this place of sacrifice.

Hadassah, I'm so sorry your husband has had to suffer through this sort of shingles. I'm sure it was problematic and certainly painful.
I'm with you on being glad to be back at my homemaking. I miss doing these things.
I do not have the excuse of career choice. I grew up with a mom who cussed and I really didn't want to be that person, yet here I am. I'm doing fair with my attempts to give it up...Sometimes I slip and then reset my sentence saying it without the offensive term.

Lana, It would be so nice if one of these would end up nearer me! I didn't see locations in the initial article and got sidetracked before I went to the lead article. I'll go back and see if they have any of that information. Thank you for sharing the link!
