This Week In My Home: Autumn Beckons

I've chosen to make this photo ex-large and I do hope it doesn't play heck with your device parameters for the photo.  The reason I made it so large was so that we might best see the details in the kitchen.

First, let's talk about color.  I love the yellow.  It was not uncommon in days past for rooms to be almost monochromatic.  Here we've the relief of  a deep grey, white appliances and the patterned tile (more on that in a moment) with subtle touches of peach and pale green which do not compete with the yellow in brightness.  It's a very sophisticated color palette really.

Why do we not use patterned tile in kitchens and baths these days?  It's sets the tone for the room and what's more that complimentary stripe about the borders of the room really brings a sort of fun means of tying all the colors in the room together.

The active kitchen side is very small really but so compact that one might just turn to one side or the other to have things within easy reach. I'm going to assume there is a small counter there next to the fridge only because it appears the depth of the area beyond is deeper than the stove on the opposite side.  I like the stool...but am curious if there is truly a spot to comfortably use the stool to sit and do work.  Is the counter on the side of the fridge free of cabinets underneath?  Or is there a pull out cutting board?  Gosh, I wish I could see in that space!

Let's look at the sink area.  Again we see what appears to be a louvered door under the sink.  This puzzles me no end.  Is it moveable?  Is it meant to allow a better air flow in that space?  I don't mind a single sink...in fact, I've told John repeatedly that should we ever redo our kitchen, I'd prefer a larger deeper (if possible) single sink rather than a double sink.

And there's that nifty slotted area to store large platters, baking sheets, and  trays.

That stove is a dreamy thing isn't it?  Or maybe you don't have vintage stove dreams like I do,  Look at all the drawers. I love that stoves once had so much storage space.  I remember Grandmama and Granny's big stoves with a nice sized oven but deep drawers too for storage.

Notice that drying rack?  Again, it's near the stove, which is convenient for drying towels, but I'm afraid that one is just a bit bulky for my taste.  I'll lay odds though that it does double duty and dries the odd bit of laundry as well.

Now let us slide behind that stove into that cozy little lounge area.  Isn't that just the spot for a weary woman to put up her feet for a few minutes?  Notice the little table and lamp there so the space would be nice for reading.  And wouldn't it be a convenient spot for a sick child to be near Mother while she was working in the kitchen?

I see drawers on the wall.  I can't quite determine what the flowers on the doors above are all about but in looking hard at the photo I note that there's a shadow cast on the cabinets near the sink so it might be a real arrangement.  It seems overly elaborate for a kitchen in my opinion.  Personally I think the little pots of mums in the windows is just the right touch.

I do like the iron table and chairs.  Did you know that iron sets like this were considered suitable for kitchens?   And that bird cage is a nice touch.

I pulled the autumn napkins from the drawer on Friday, along with the deep red placemats and the wooden napkin rings carved with leaves.  I put the amber colored candles in the candleholders on the table.  It seemed the appropriate thing given that we were going to welcome in Rosh Hashanah with Shabat that evening and it shall be autumn before the new week is well started.  I haven't jumped the gun on decorating.  Indeed, at this moment, there's nothing decorated for autumn in my home at present...but the bin of things awaits in the guest room.  I am ready for the change of season and I welcome it.

I've also indulged in listening to lovely 'vintage' autumn music.  It's so soothing.  It's also a good foil.  I put on my headphones and listen whenever John puts on one of his news programs or Opinion Editorial sites.  I live in my own little world at those moments.  I might have to turn the volume up a bit higher at times to shut it out but hey it works...I might be a little deaf(er) but, you know, we do what we must for the sake of love, lol.

My week this coming week looks a bit different than it has.  It's a temporary thing but some things will very much remain the same:  I'll do light household chores and make meals, same as always.  Remember what I always say, the world might end but meals and clean laundry are still needed.  The world is not ending by any means.  However it is a week in which I can plan little and that's okay.  I'm going to go with the flow with work and meals both.  I'll share what we did do and what we ate in the weekly post at the end of the week, okay?

In the meantime, have a wonderful week!

I'm absolutely loving your vintage kitchen series. Yesterday, I dragged husband into the kitchen to talk about putting a sea green tile back splash somewhere in the kitchen. This was inspired by one of your vintage kitchens.

I also very much like today's kitchen. Two things. I do believe the painting of the flower arrangement is NOT on the cupboard door but is on the glass protection behind the stove. Look closer at the angle.

Also, I wonder about the chaise lounge type furniture. An older woman, whose children are grown, might use it to read or rest while waiting for a couple of minutes on something that is cooking. But a younger woman, with kidlets running rampant, probably needs to be checking on them constantly. I actually visualize children hanging out in the kitchen and sitting on it, reading a book, or such, to be near mom. It's probably usually covered with toys. :D

What a cheerful kitchen! I like the color and the flooring and table. I would love a farmhouse sink and that stove. But I would get rid of the lounge and put in more cabinets and move the stove.
Hope everything is ok, and I hope you have a good week.

This kitchen is my favorite of all of them. I really like the chaise and it could even be a guest bed if needed. I have kept a stool in my kitchen for years now. It really comes in handy when there are tons of veggies to prep or I have to mind something for awhile on the stove. One of my base cabinets is all divided for baking sheets and such. I was so excited to find it when we first bought the house. I need to pull out my fall napkins and I also have some beautiful fall plates that get forgotten year after year.

I hope your unusual week is something fun! Can't wait to hear!

We had a very similar set of table and chairs in our kitchen for years! It now graces our screened gazebo, and gets quite a work out three seasons of the year. I love the stove too, and would love to find a similar one some day. The fridge and stove in my parent's home is Harvest Gold. It was bought new when they purchased the home in 1970 and is still going strong! Donna

I agree with Anne (above) and think that is a glass panel above the stove that reaches to the ceiling with that flower picture painted/ etched on it. I like the little work area of the kitchen and agree it is probably handy with everything close by (too close??) as one works. That lounge area seems like a lot of wasted space, although I don't think they had as many dishes, small appliances, gadgets, etc. as we do today to store, so perhaps more cabinets wouldn't have been necessary. But those drawers on that wall seem quite useless. Would one have to climb on the lounge to get into the drawers?? It seems like a lot of wasted space in that area. I think my grandparents would have laughed at the thought of lying down in their kitchen to put their feet up. It doesn't sound like a bad idea, but it doesn't seem like it would have been done in the time of that sweet kitchen!!

First thing I noticed was the ‘bed’ in the kitchen and I lol’ed😂 I guess it’s a window seat? But anyway, it’s funny that people want what they don’t have! I have deep single sink. I’d love a double sink , I love to hand wash dishes, and it seems more efficient to me to have a double sink, one side to soak the dirty ones, and one to rinse. I have to pile the larger items on the counter(which by the way is a small kitchen), to get to the smaller things. Anyway, Shana Tova friend! Liz

I don't understand the louvers under the sink here either. No handle so is is closed? They used to have louvers often under sinks but may times they were just under the front of the sink a short ways down or a few in the doors for keeping that area dry. I wish we could see more than just half that green stool. :) If you're the only one in the kitchen this would work. Now that hubby is home we are constantly having to wait for one of us to move to do something in the kitchen. We have an outside door and to doors into the kitchen from the rest of the house but we are always in each others way. All day long. :( Seems we both have the same idea of going the same place at the same time. !!! I am liking most of the floor patterns you have shown. I noticed now in the redo the home shows they are using patterned tiles in the baths and sometimes kitchens too. Flooring is down a long time so you bestsellers consider the colors you will want to use for a long time if you do a pattern. What do you think of this floor?? I see a glass panel above the stove. How hard would that be to clean grease off of. :) But is is very pretty ! m Loving the kitchens ! Sarah

I have mixed feelings about this kitchen. Overall, I think it is cheerful. The yellow on the walls is the same color as my kitchen walls. I have accents of green buffalo plaid curtains and other green accents just like this kitchen, only a little more of it. I like the stove but not where it is in the middle of the room and I dislike the, what looks like, glass panel behind it. It must be tough to keep clean. I am also not fond of the sitting area behind the stove. Maybe if it was in a different area I might like it. The flooring is very nice. We had that type of flooring when I was a child. It doesn't look like there is enough cabinet space there for my taste. The flower pots are a nice touch. I have enjoyed these pics of vintage kitchens!

It's not a door under the sink, it's vent, really just an open area in the cabinet for the warmth to float through from the furnace. I had one in the one house we rented. It was common to help keep pipes from freezing.

Can't see the frig, must be hiding under the ad. I do remember my parents telling me that patterns were used in the kitchen flooring as it was easier to hide tears and scuff marks that way as that was the floor that got the most wear in a home.

I have a yellow kitchen with solid maple wood flooring (made from the trees cut from the property). I sure wished I had the deep window sills of this picture so I could put plants on them .
