June 5: You Never Know What a Day Will Bring

I'll just jump right in with both feet.  I woke middle of the morning and stayed awake a good two hours.  I finally drifted back off about daybreak and slept until 8:15. Not much extra sleep but enough to see me through the day.  I didn't have hard things to attend to this morning, so it all worked out.

John had an eye appointment this afternoon and we literally were only a matter of a mile or so from Katie's. So, we ran by there to visit with them for a wee bit.  Henry was all happy smiles to see us.  Caleb got plum excited to see us at the door.  Taylor was happy to get to see us again so soon.

But the big thing that happened today was that Henry had his first solid foods.  It began when I opened the diet Dr. Pepper, I'd brought with me.  He immediately reached for it.  Then I picked up a potato chip and he grabbed for that.  I laughingly said to Katie, "This boy is HUNGRY!"  She had tried to get him to eat baby food many times, but he was having none of it.

Today she brought out the 'solids' she's comfortable with him having.  Things like puffs and 'biscuits' that turn into mush the moment saliva touches them.  When she came towards him with those containers, he grabbed for them all!  He accepted and ate some of each of the three items and happily. No yucky faces, no spitting food out, etc.

Now mind you all, were it me, I'd be giving him mild soft table foods at this point, but Katie plays it far more cautious than some moms do and that's for her to determine.  However, Henry has made his statement.  He'll have food please, and as near real food as she can find to give him, none of that mushy stuff!

What was funny to me was that Taylor wanted to sample all of his foods herself.  And so did Caleb.  As if Henry was getting something yummier than anything they might get themselves.  Silly children.

John and I stayed a bit then headed home.  He had his eyes dilated, so I drove which doesn't happen often when we're in a car together.  We talked and talked all the way home.  I stopped in town at the library and picked up a calendar for the summer reading club...Then we headed on home.  I was thinking about summer reading club, supper, gathering things from the car.

We came indoors and I was starting a quick supper when the phone rang.  It was Katie.  She said, "I hate to ask you this..."

In the time since we'd left her house and arrived home, the babysitter had quit.  One day in and she'd quit.  She decided that keeping three children (she was bringing her own to the house with her) was just too much for her.

So, for the next month, five weeks or so, I will be driving over to Warner Robins five days a week to keep Caleb and Henry until the last two weeks of July when Cody will be off and can keep the boys.  Summer reading program is off the table.  Not a tragedy nor a hardship but not quite the summer plans we had.  I'll start Monday.  So be it.

I'll take the kids to the library on Saturdays and try to encourage them to read and if there's a particularly interesting program on perhaps Sam or Bess might take them if they are free.

And that is that for today.

I'm all for Katie introducing solid foods to Henry in her own way, but will say that we used baby-led weaning with Layla and it was amazing. No baby foods, we just let her eat from the table as she was able and willing. Obviously not dangerous foods for a baby, but whatever was appropriate. Sounds like Henry will be a fan when he graduates to the table. Lol.
P.S. I'm catching up on your blog from this past week after returning from my trip to my sister's. It was a busy week with Layla...

P.S.S. I know the next weeks will be busy and different from what you had planned, but it will be a blessing to spend so much good time with Caleb and Henry. This is a moment in time, not the rest of your life - remembering this is how I get through times I might find difficult. ♥
