I thoroughly enjoyed Tuesday and was more than ready to tackle my July list come Wednesday morning....and then I got a phone call, lol. Seriously, Cody was called to go back to work, and I agreed to come in to pick up where he left off in childcare. We spoke yesterday evening on the phone and he explained the situation at work that necessitated his going in Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I agreed to keep the kids through the end of the week, but Cody has told his boss he absolutely cannot return to work until school starts July 30.
John went over with me yesterday. We ran a couple of errands. I needed to get a birthday card for Daniel (he'll be 16 this year...) and John needed more poison ivy/oak medications. The Dollar store had nothing. Zilch. We went up to the local pharmacy where I paid a pretty penny for Benadryl ointment, Calamine lotion and hemorrhoid cream.
Lest you think I am sharing TMI, I had read online that the hemorrhoid cream could be beneficial in treating the itchiness and since the Benadryl topical is absorbed through the skin if used repeatedly in too short a time period you can get too much of it. Hence, I decided we'd try the Hemorrhoid cream. I'll share that John pronounced it effective, but he prefers the Calamine lotion. I was looking for Ivy Dry which we've used with success in the past too, but no luck finding that.
Here's where I got the least bit irritated. Having gone into two different stores looking for products, John let me know he was displeased I hadn't found what he really wanted. Mind you all, he couldn't tell me what it was he wanted, but he knew what it was. Not being able to read his mind, I did the best I could finding what I knew had already been effective and which we'd used in the past. I bit my tongue hard to keep from telling him there been absolutely nothing stopping his going into either store and perusing the shelves same as I had...And yes, I am getting some small satisfaction in sharing that with you all! Petty is indeed my occasional middle name.
We went on to keep the boys. Henry was so pleased that Grampa came along with me. He went right to him and refused to leave him except for the occasional bit of snuggling with me, then he'd go right back to Grampa. He didn't want to explore the sofa table or chase the cat or crawl all over Caleb nor the floor. He merely wanted to stick tight to his Grampa and he did.
John went to take quiet time with Caleb. I'm sure he thought he would get a nap. Ha! Silly man. He's had some very miserable nights with this combination of poison oak and ivy. I kept reminding him in the past he'd always gone to the doctor for steroids. He really should have gone this time, but thankfully the Calamine lotion brought the relief he was looking for. But no nap was forthcoming, lol.
After we left there yesterday, we stopped to schedule an oil change and were told they could take us right away. John kindly offered to buy chicken for our supper last night after we left. I appreciated it. We were on our way home when Sam texted saying he needed to talk to us. We looked at the time, and suggested he come over at 8pm. We wanted to eat supper and watch our church service.
Sam came by at 8pm. He just wanted to ask if we could take the kids to their doctor appointments. We told him that wasn't a problem. We are familiar with the doctor, which is the same one that Katie uses for the boys and Bella. The children's appointments are all at the same time so it really should be a breeze.
Today went well. Caleb had an achievement he was proud to share about. Henry acted as though it was days since he'd seen me last. Both boys were very good all day long.
I saw a recipe on @Alisonhavens on Instagram this morning and made that for supper when I came home. It was really good. I was mindful of my pantry challenge and did not stop to purchase cherry tomatoes, nor couscous. Instead, I subbed in canned tomatoes and used the Orzo that was in the pantry. I don't keep Italian seasoning blend on hand, since many contain Marjoram which I am allergic to. Instead, I mixed my own blend with basil, parsley, and oregano.
Feta Dump Bake
1 large chicken breast, cut into cubes
2 cups chopped broccoli
1 cup cherry tomatoes
8-ounce block of feta cheese
1 tsp each of garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt and 1/4 tsp pepper
I put mine in an 8 x8 pan. Her recipe said bake at 400F for 30 minutes. I opted to bake at 350F for 40 minutes in the Toaster oven on Bake mode. Mix the juices and cheese together before serving.
This makes enough for four, by the way. I put leftovers into the fridge to have over the weekend. John told me several times about how good it was. I enjoyed it myself. The seasonings were just right. I'll definitely be making this again.
