In My Home This Week: Not Ready, But Let's Go

This week I thought I'd share this lovely bedroom.  I looked at so many images from the 20's including a children's nursery, sunrooms and even a sleeping porch but it was this sunny lovely room that spoke to me most.    Again it's an ad for a linoleum flooring product but the room is so sunny and pleasant that I just had to share.  I could imagine taking my morning coffee in that chair with the sun streaming in and my Bible in hand.

Admittedly at this point in my Saturday, it's the bed that draws my attention.  I'd like to be lying down in that feathery softness right now...Bliss!

I won't bore you with details but do any of you think this room pretty?

In my home this week:

I broke down and bought bagels this weekend.  John was so happy...I thought ruefully to myself, "I can make this..." and the other half of my brain said "Sure you can...but you can't with Caleb so buy the darned things."   And so went the whole of my grocery shopping.  I skipped the one store I was most adamant we wouldn't skip because Saturday and shopping is not fun.

I will share quickly that I didn't notice any outages except Whole Kernel corn.  They had a case of Stokely corn for 79c a can and I looked at the 49c routine price of Aldi's brand and decided to skip it.  I'll put that on my list of things to check at other stores for later.

Prices on meat were higher but not exorbitant.  I can see this is where our pocketbooks shall feel the true pinch this year. However, once home today, I was scanning an email from Kroger that touted 'cheap' prices on pork.  Boneless pork loins, formerly 98c a pound are now $3.98/per pound and that was about the lowest price on their 'cheap' pork.

Fortunately deer season opened today and Sam got his first deer.  I'm sure once his freezer is full, we'll be next on the list so we'll have that at least.

Work:

I'm just going to tackle whatever jobs I can as I can.  It likely won't be much but I've found that I can get the most necessary things done and the few small tasks that I notice.  That's good enough for me this week.  If I get to anything extra I'll let you know.

I'll have an extra child on Thursday, so we'll see how that goes.  I'm NOT expecting any rest time that day because I obviously can't put two down at the same time.  I'll see if the other one will rest or if it's going to be a scream fest.   I get to do a repeat over the weekend with other children and so I'm just going to do my best this week.

The only other job I really must tend to this week is to determine how and where to gather plants, watering plants, deadheading plants, trimming plants...It's all about plants and it's all got to be done either before Caleb arrives, while he naps or after he leaves.  I had to move the African violets and don't dare put out the orchids in their usual spot for winter.

Kitchen:

With meals planned already (see below), I'm going to pretty much call that it in the kitchen...Though John hinted broadly that chocolate chip cookies wouldn't be amiss this week, so I will try to get those mixed and baked  and some dough put in the freezer.

I'd love to say I'm going to prep foods for the week to ease my way but facts are facts.  My fridge is so full I haven't got room to put anything once prepped.  Perhaps once Katie takes home the chicken broth I just made on Friday and when I've cut up the bell peppers for the freezer I'll have a  wee bit more room in my fridge.

Meals:

Taco Nachos

Gramma's Fried Chicken, Potato Salad, Collard Greens, Chocolate Cream Pie

Arroz con Pollo, Salad

Swedish Meat Balls and Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, Green Peas, Cranberry sauce

Potato Soup, Cheesy Garlic Toast

on my own so perhaps leftovers

Shoe Box Supper:  Alpine Chicken, Green Beans, Cranberry Sauce, Slaw

Personal/Leisure:

Rest, read...that is on repeat around here.

I wish I could say I had time and energy for anything more but here I am on Saturday evening typing this and honestly the idea of a busy Sunday ahead of me makes me want to give up already.

Thursday night I shall be at home alone for the first time in nearly 2 months.  No one but little ole me and it's been far, far too long.  I'm going to say I'm going to do something very specific:  I want to watch a movie, preferably something Jane Austen-ish.  Here's the deal, though, Thursdays are usually a really hard day because I'm already tired and I'll have another child here in addition to Caleb and later that afternoon likely have still more.  So my 'movie' might well become just going on to bed and lying there watching a movie/snoozing.  Just sayin'...

Lovely bedroom, I agree, it is a beautiful design and so sunny, thank you for posting it. Your week sounds crazy…I never had kids and at 65, the thought of helping with grandkids makes my hair stand on end ;). So I understand your dream of a quiet night alone. I also saw the Kroger add for their pork sale…checked the prices, and your prices are the same as we had in Phoenix. I remember $0.99 for pork loin and now it is on sale for $3.69 or something crazy. I hope the pig business will be back to normal next year….

Meat is most reasonable at Sam's other than the discount stores here. Pork loins were 2.69 and whole beef sirloin tips were 3.96 last time we were there. We are very well stocked on meat other than beef cubed steak but I am waiting for a good sale. I believe Sam's is running their $45 membership with a $45 gift card back again right now if anyone is interested.

The bedroom is pretty but once again looks too much like what I suffered with for too many years. We have hardwood floors but I waited 20 years after we bought our house for the wallpaper to come down. It was the last room in a house where nearly every wall was papered.

I want to tell you all about a maybe new product we found and have been very happy with. For twenty years I wanted the spots at the corner of our house switched to motion lights. Hubby said it would be a massive amount of work so we never did it. Then I saw GE motion light bulbs on Amazon. We ordered two and simply took out the old bulbs and screwed in the motion bulbs. They work perfectly and we are so happy to have been able to switch to motion lights for so little expense and no job to do! I hope this helps one of you others.

Our time here at the lake is flying by. We never realize how tired we were until we get here and crash.

There are things I like about the bedroom, particularly the windows and the sunlight pouring in. I understand the company was selling linoleum but I would prefer hardwood floors. The chair by the window is perfect. No room in our bedroom to place a chair. The dresser is a decent size but I'm wondering about the little table with the flowers. Just an accent piece I guess.

Not a thing wrong with rest and read! Sometimes that is all the leisure "me" time we can get. I hope you enjoy your Thursday night. As much as we may love our spouses there are times when silence is golden and the freedom to do as we wish is sublime. The Urban Farmer is taking his walk now and I have been working on moving seasonal wardrobes around. We actually have times in the day when we do our own thing. When he returns we will go to Fresh Thyme Farmer's Market to pick up orange juice and check out their 25% off on supplements and beauty goods.

Lunch is prepared, leftover hamburger soup. I used to make it for my youngest daughter. Later on today I need to use the ground turkey and make dog food for a few days. They seem to like "mom" food as well as the Nutro which is in short supply. Looking for a good scone recipe if anyone makes them. Schwan's sells a frozen dough but it's a little pricey.

Thanks to Miss Lana for mentioning the motion sensor light bulbs! We have security lights on the garage and on the back of the house but I would like one on the porch light. My daughter works some odd hours and these could be used in her outdoor lighting fixtures.

I must get back to my task or it will be sitting in the way and thumbing its nose at me! Enjoy your week!

I loved John hinting that it wouldn't "go amiss" if some homemade chocolate chip cookies appeared in his life. I was quite envious. I peeked in our kitchen to see if there was anyone to whom I could hint about my cravings.

Alas, not a soul. Do you make housecalls, Terri?

At least a decade ago I picked up a few basic cookbooks and put them in the cupboard here at the lake. Image my surprise today to find one of them is your favorite Culinary Arts Institute Cookbook! It is going home with me!

Traveling Oltmans: I hope that I do get that alone time. I'm sure I'm going to more than need it.

Lana, I hope you enjoy that cookbook. I use it more often than any other in my home! Enjoy those lake days. Sam's is in Macon and not someplace we typically go. The Aldi in that area is not nearly as nice as the one in our usual shopping area.

Juls, I had a bigger than usual closet in the old 1900's house I lived in in my childhood years. I miss that big old room, too, it had a lovely square bay at one end of the room.

Donna, my granny used to make what she called dog bread with gravy for her dog when she had no food. The dog lived for a long time so it must have suited her, lol.

Dearest Anne, too tired to consider a house call at my own house! lol

Terri, I am just getting caught up in a few of your posts. I finally got a new keyboard for my iPad, so I am back to commenting more. I just need to keep my iPad off my main kitchen work area so food/water doesn’t splash on it!

I just realized you had your quiet evening last night. I hope it was restful for you! What did you do? (Or more importantly NOT do!). I have been reading your blog long enough to know that you used to get time to yourself more often. I do relish a quiet house now and then myself.

We arrived in Nashville yesterday for our youngest son’s homeschool soccer championship tournament. A looong drive, but said son can now drive so he helped a bit (though I can’t seem to relax with him driving yet.). We have one more year of soccer to go and then we are done with children’s sports. So odd that all our sons will be officially adults next year. We are definitely sensing that shift of an empty house coming in the next few years.

We have had the absolute loveliest autumn here in Wisconsin. The weather has been just perfect and way beyond our normal 10/7 frost date. Well, I knew that I was being lulled into thinking that winter was further away and that I really didn’t NEED to start preparing for it?! It frosted last night and looks like it will again tonight. We will arrive home late Sunday and I absolutely need to plant the daffodil bulbs I got. I just have to remember exactly where my tulip bulbs are?? Then it will be full on winter prep with cutting down perennials and fall leaf clean up, to getting out the winter gear and sorting it. Oh, and I have to finish washing windows. Yep, I always put off winter prep, but i can no longer. I will try to think of all the enjoyable things winter brings instead!

I got the 1973 Culinary Arts Institute Book and will start going through it after winter prep. I think this is the one you have?

Well I hope you are in your chair, relaxing after another busy week. You are such a wonderful mother and grandmother! Hugs to you!
