April 1: Blooming

There are days I don't even know what hit me...

Last week, out of the blue, John started talking about getting the kitchen painted.  I was "Oh okay..." and pretty much paid him no mind.  On Friday, he called one of the contractors who worked on the house in 2023, and he stopped by on Saturday to give us a quote.

TODAY, we bought paint and supplies, and I think the painting will begin tomorrow!  My head is awhirl!  John is, by his own estimation, a proficient master of procrastination but golly gee, when he makes up his mind, there will be no blade of grass safe in his path.

The guy is also going to do some necessary remodeling of the front porch rails and work on the decking that is also necessary, but the kitchen/laundry/back entry is the prime news in my opinion.

And of course, it all starts the same day I have two grands to watch, and Katie is bringing over her three...It will be a semi-zoo I'm afraid.  And now I must figure out what I might make for lunch because we'll have a house full.  This was not on my radar (not the grands but the kitchen work) so I've been completely thrown by it all.

So, in between Saturday and today, John has had a million doubts, wavering in  his determination, and anxious about spending period.   He sat at the table yesterday and suddenly threw down his pen.  "Do you realize how much this is going to cost us?  Do you sincerely think buying paint that costs $xxxx is worthwhile?"  I calmly looked at him and said, "John there is nothing that says we have to have this work done.  We can put it off.  Just tell Travis you're sorry and we'll be done."

I could see him warring within himself.  He wanted me to be outraged over the cost of the paint and told me how much it was a gallon.  I looked at him and said "You want to redo your math?  Because 10 gallons times that figure is $xxx."  He looked so funny.  For some reason he was figuring we needed 30 gallons of paint!  No wonder his figures were so high, lol.

This morning we got up with the intention of going to the store.  We had our list ready.  And naturally I slept in late.  Then we puttered around very leisurely and were surprised about 11:15 when Travis came by.  We hadn't even dressed.  I'd only just finished my morning coffee!  We got in gear and got our clothes on, double checked our list against Travis' supply needs and then headed out to do our shopping.

That was the easiest shopping I've ever done.  Every single item we needed was in stock and located on two aisles that were side by side.  For once in Lowes, none of the help took a look at our questioning faces and went running away.  No, they hung around and actually offered to help.  Wonder of wonders!

Was John shell shocked when we were done paying for things?  Possibly yes.  But he survived it.

The shock of the cost of ferns helped keep me out of the garden center today, though all the flowers made it very difficult to stay out of the area.  However, a Boston fern this year is $35.  I have rarely paid more than $14 for one so you can bet I'll be thinking three or four times before I buy a fern this year.  That's just too high for my budget.

Our day wasn't quite done.  I had been beyond ready to go get my hair cut.  I really went a long time between cuts this time.  I am trying hard to find a happy in between of having a longer pixie without looking shaggy.  I got one of my favored stylists and she did exactly what I asked.  My hair looks a lot better than it did.  I've always said that no matter how crummy you feel, a decent looking hair cut can turn your day around.

John and I went to Burger King and got hamburgers and unsweetened tea and sat in the shade of big old tree to eat our lunch.  It was so peaceful and pleasant, and we agreed it was a very good spot for a picnic.  I'd just read this morning that eating outdoors is a good way to regulate something or other...Can't recall just what we needed to regulate but it was something I thought would benefit me, so I was glad to put 'eating outdoors' in practice, even if that meant sitting under a shade tree with the car windows down.

Now I have to go make supper.  Talk to you all tomorrow.

I'm so happy for you to be getting the painting and other work done. Since your kitchen will be torn up with the painting, take the little kids out for lunch, or make something in advance you could take outside. (Even sandwiches).

There is only ONE thing that feels better than a good hair cut and that's a new bra on the same day!

I love ferns, but don't buy them often. Last summer my MIL was given a fern by the church across the street from her. She's not a plant person and gave it to me. It lasted until almost December, then I tried bringing it inside to winter, but it did not like that.
Recently I saw a reel of someone purchasing a fern, then cutting it in half for two planters. If the opportunity arises to have a plant this year, I may try that.

I'm so happy you're getting the painting done! I know you will feel complete on that project when it's done. My husband is so similar in that he will procrastinate and then suddenly when it's his idea to start there is no stopping him.

Tammy I was in a state of shock over that. Then we passed the high school which was having a plant sale and I said to John, "I'll bet they have ferns for less than $35." He replied, "We'll never know..." and drove right past. Rolling eyes...

I know you'll be so happy to have your kitchen completed!

As for the cost of paint, I was stunned by how expensive it has gotten. David bought the paint for the bathroom woodwork at Sherwin Williams this past week and it was $80 for a gallon! Fortunately we'll just need one gallon for the woodwork and one for the walls and ceiling (I hope!).

Oh, John. LOL
I saw on IG that WalMart has ferns for $9.97. I might check tomorrow morning when I go to town.
