April 13: Plans and Ambitions

Josh didn't get to go to the library with us on Saturday.  He has had fever and ailments all week and on Saturday broke out in a rash (Roseola).  It's a viral ailment and probably going through the schools.  He didn't even come out the door to greet me but he stood in front of the open door and waved to me.

Millie wanted to know if we could go have 'fun' after the library and I told her I felt I needed to do something that Josh could share in, so suggested getting a tub of Rainbow Sherbert.   Isaac asked for drinks and when I stopped at the freezer case to grab a pizza for John and me for lunch, Millie wanted to know if she could take Pizza home, too.  I hadn't planned to spend so much there but that's the way it is with the kids.  They know too well I won't say no if it's reasonable, but I tend to forget that even reasonable can add up to a good bit. Sam texted me just as I turned into the road home that he was making lunch.  Well, he's got supper now, too.

I promised the kids we'd do something fun next time we go out when everyone is feeling better.  John and I are both convinced we've got a little something.  A little queasy, a little headache and a little ick feeling, but nothing to lie in bed and moan over.

Another week here...The week before Easter and the official halfway mark of another month.  I've been leisurely for far too long and I'm ready to get to work.   There are six bags of mulch in my backyard waiting for me to spread them.  I haven't worked in the yard at all since March when I first began to feel better.  I want to get those pots emptied that need to be emptied and to discover what's growing around the north and west sides of the yard.

But more than that...Oh so much more!  I won't list it all, it's impossible to do so!

1.  Get the pots around the house prepared for new planting.  The roses are blooming, even the New Dawn that generally waits until Mother's Day week.  The tea roses in the planter around front have buds too.  Note to self to buy more of those as they make excellent potted plants.

2.  Do follow-up appointment for next round of lab work.  I'm curious to see how the results go with this lot.  I confess I'm far more concerned with A1C and cholesterol readings than anything else.  If those numbers are noticeably better, I may skip the doctor follow-up visit as I'm still paying for our last follow-up visits.

3.  Proper house cleaning.  When Travis was here on Saturday he removed some things off the wall.  Oh, the dust!  I was embarrassed.  Here I am thinking I'm keeping a clean house.  The truth is that more and more lately, I'm keeping a 'tidy' house and that is not the same thing as a clean house.

I won't slay myself over this task.  I'll just go through each room and give it a proper clean as I'm already working in the area.  I don't have to do it all at once.

4.  Back Porch clear-up.  I've yet to do a single thing outdoors but I'm ready.  I'm ready to put a fresh look on the porches and have them nice for enjoying these last cool days.

5.  Plan Meals.

Breakfast:

Pancakes, Sausage

Oatmeal x 2 or 3

Scrambled Eggs, Toast, Fruit

Lunch:

Tuna Pasta Salad x 2.  John will be happy to see this on the menu.  I'll try hard not to make a Dutch oven full of the stuff.  I have all the lovely fresh things on hand though that I normally put in it and I want to make it while I have them.

Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich

Chicken Salad, Whole Wheat Crackers, Celery and Carrot Sticks

Egg Salad Sandwiches, Chips

Dinner:

Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes, Oven Fries.

Tandoori Chicken, Rice, Broccoli.

Easy Cottage Pie, Fruit Salad, Muffins.

Souvlaki Chicken, Whole Wheat Pita bread, Feta, Cucumber and Tomato Salad.

Shrimp Scampi (me), Steak or Burger (John), Salads, Crusty Bread

As you know, my meal plans are subject to change/whimsy/laziness.  Generally, though I do use what I have out.  I'm learning to take most meats out to thaw on Saturday or Sunday.  I have a very cold meat shelf in my fridge and most weeks the meat is partly frozen when I go to use it.

I know the tasks I've set myself look like they are very few, but I know full well that two or three mornings possibly four will be required to do the yard work alone.  And the housework is going to be an ongoing thing.

Travis is working here this weekend.  He's removed all the cheap cardboard corner molding that's been dinted and torn and broken over the years and he's replaced it with real wood.  He's also framed out the laundry area and back door with real wood.  I expect tomorrow we'll come home to find the back entry painted with primer but not sure we'll get the paint coat on.  It might be two weekends more before we get to the kitchen proper.  I'm not complaining.  As I've said, this is a side job for Travis, not his main employment but to watch him take such care to replace things and fix them properly, better than we'd hoped makes the slow progress more than worthwhile. I told John I hope he knows we're getting far more for our money than he ever realized when he contracted with Travis to do this work.
