The Homemaker Plans Her Week: Tying Up Loose Ends

In my home this week, we begin the big Birthday Rush.  All month long we have family birthdays nearly every single week, and more often than not, it's two per week.

Officially with this weekend, Memorial Day, summer 'begins' but I don't expect anyone is going to be swimming this year.  We woke Saturday morning to a chill 56F.  I had planned to have coffee on the back porch and read my book for a bit, but even sitting in the sun, it was chilly.  Coffee didn't help warm me up.  I was soon back indoors looking for a warmer spot to sit!

I've made my plans for this week.  I'm ready to wrap up May...

Work:

No specific zone work this week.  I'm going to spend this week tying up all the loose ends of my plans from the month of May, weekly or monthly goals.  I'm just going to go down the lists and check off what I can.

Plant the eggplants I was given.  I also have sprouted sweet potatoes I thought I'd plant and see if they come to anything.

I hope I can get into the shed and put a few things away more neatly, perhaps gather another bin for donation and blow the bugs out of the place.  I just want to clear a path, really, so I can perhaps get a few more things out of the kitchen and into the shed.

I'll have a full four weeks in June to do zone tasks, so this is my catch-up week.

And it seems to me that is quite enough work to plan on doing!

Kitchen:

Having determined that the small bites method is the only way I can accomplish much of anything, I will locate the pressure cooker/canner instruction booklet and try that out this week.  And perhaps I can view a video about using the gas grill as well.  I don't think either of these things is difficult, simply that I haven't used either one before.  I want to know exactly what I ought to be doing for safety's sake.

A pantry inventory would be helpful to have on hand.  I keep adding things in but I haven't taken time to properly organize and set things up once more.  I'll do this one shelf at a time if I must, but it really should be done.

There are a couple of items I feel I could comfortably move out of the kitchen right now.  I'll probably try to keep this task fairly simple.  Again, I'm working on the small bites method of doing things.

Personal/Leisure:

Plan June outfits and set up a few, accessories included.

Pedicure/manicure.

Try to do light makeup daily.  I need to order more of the Laura Geller foundation I love to use daily.  I'll look for coupon codes and a sale on this item since it can be expensive.  I will say it lasts very well, though.  By the way, apparently the Milani baked blush is a dupe for the Laura Geller one or so those in the know assure me via the few beauty vlogs I've seen.

Read.

Color.

Get a day out with John.  We missed our day out over the weekend and have an opportunity to make up that time on Monday.  Sort of.  We'll visit with Mama and take her to lunch, then run errands.  But it will be child-free for a bit anyway.  I don't know when we'll 'celebrate' our anniversary...but just to get a little time away alone with John during the day is enough.

Slughorn, some I've scanned from my vintage magazines, some I found on Pinterest or on a Bing search using the term vintage and whatever I wanted, like vintage homemaker or vintage ads. I will say that there is some risk in this as with all searches on the internet there are sometimes questionable things that come up when you least expect it and think it's innocent and it proves not to be. I just make note not to look for that particular thing every again, lol.

The grandchildren are down at the lake swimming in the freezing water! I'm sitting on my rocker on the deck watching. They are having a blast cold or not!

I just read your last half dozen or so posts, so am caught up now. Greg and I celebrated our anniversary last week as well (23rd). It happened to be the evening my sister was at our house on her way to Sioux City (she's moved away from Texas!!). We grilled a couple of steaks, then I sliced them up, and it was the perfect way to share them between the three of us.

Layla and I went up to Sioux City with her for a couple of days. We couldn't get into the house they bought, but could drive over there and see the outside. Her husband and daughter will travel there this coming weekend, and their belongings should arrive early that next week. It's so exciting to have them close-ish!

Reading about the 56° being too cool for you to sit out and drink your coffee made me smile. I love when the early morning is cool like that and get the most work done outside then. Our highs are in the low to mid-80s, which feels too hot for me, and I'm sure would be lovely for you.

Once you start using the grill there will be no turning back! I use it often in the summer, especially on hot days. Cast iron works great on a grill! I will often throw some potatoes to cook in the skillet and then add my meat later. Great way to keep the heat out of the house.

Lana, I mentioned on Memorial Day that it was entirely too cool to get into water for swimming and my son said, "No it's not!" Yes, it was! lol. But I remember shaking with cold once out of the water and still being loath to leave it when Granny told us it was time to go home.

Tammy how nice to have your sister nearer by. It does cut down on your chance to travel a bit though, doesn't it?

I've been out in that cool morning air working hard this past week and wish the temps were the same this week!

Wendy, There's a good idea! I never once thought of using my cast iron on the grill. I shall keep that in mind.
