May 23: Goodness! Memorial Day Weekend

We were watching service at church on Wednesday night and the pastor mentioned Memorial Day weekend service.  "He's gotten mixed up!  It's not Memorial Day this weekend," I told John.  Well, yes, it is.  Memorial Day weekend, our wedding anniversary weekend, the last full weekend of May, and the lead into six weeks of birthdays.  Here we go!

Today, I felt the need to go out alone on my own.  It's been months since I went to Food Depot, the discount grocery.  I had a short list for this store but wanted to check out the discount produce rack.  Today I purchased 5 large green bell peppers for $1.50, Roma tomatoes for $1, parsley 75c and green onions for 75c.  I also got four decent looking firm bananas for 78c from the clearance rack.  I checked out meats in the clearance bin but saw nothing decent.

Then I drove over to Butler.  I've noted more and more that Piggly Wiggly in our county seat has a couple of really decent priced items nearly every week now.  They are still stupidly high on many things.  I priced apples today at $6.99 for a 2-pound bag and sliced Swiss cheese at over $6 for a 10-ounce package.  But they also had 70/30 ground beef for $3.99 a pound as well as a shoulder roast for $4.69/pound.  I got both.

Then I went to Dollar General.  My main goal there was to pick up birthday/occasion cards.  I needed to buy 9 cards today and two gift cards for occasion gifts.  I picked up a bag each of plums and apples for fruit in Dollar General.

Mostly I just enjoyed myself.  I like wandering around the grocery looking at random things and not being distracted by questions.  I look at all the things I've no intention of buying which is whatever crosses my mind to look at and price.  I knew I was not in the mood to randomly spend money today, so it was safe for me to take this excursion.

I also just enjoyed the ride.  As I started out this morning, it was just 80F and the air outdoors was soft.  I rode all the way to Fort Valley with the windows down and it was so pleasant.  Everything was blue or green and it all looked so lovely.    It did my heart good to be out in my countryside.

On the way home, I came in the back side of the property.  Up at Sam's the boys were in the pool playing.  I waved, backed up and called out to them.  "I can swim, Gramma!"  I don't see how anyone is swimming in two feet of water, but they were having fun.

While at Food Depot, I picked up a hanging basket geranium in a bright raspberry pink and a six pack of impatiens since my planting of seeds yielded nothing.  There looks to be three or four plants in each of the cells.  I'll try to get those planted out in the morning.

I don't know what I plan to do with the geranium.  I love them dearly, but they do poorly for me overall.  I used to water my geraniums with weak tea, something Granny told me my great grandmother did.  Apparently that woman was known for her dab hand with making geraniums and begonias flourish.

I need to take time before this weekend starts to get my plans in place for the birthdays ahead.  Also check out the library system site and see the calendar for the reading program so I can lay out my plans for the kids.  I need to plan meals for this weekend as well as meals for next week.  I also need to plan my work for next week so that I can get some of this work done.

How blessed I am to have so many pleasant things I can consider in the days ahead.  Have a lovely first weekend of summer!
