May 2: Out of Sorts

I've been working hard in the yard this week. Of course, I can't put in a full day of it because that is entirely too exhausting, but I will say that housework each morning followed by a long session in the yard has really taken its toll on me.

Progress has been slow, but I went out today with a very clear idea of just what I wanted to get done.  The small bed next to the back steps is now in fit shape for the year.   All of the empty pots are out of the bed.  I combined all the soil from said pots and used it to fill pots afresh.   But one needn't get excited over one spot finished here and one spot finished there when everything in between is obviously still in need of a good deal of work!

At any rate, I'm ready for a nice long restful day of doing nothing much but 'fun' stuff like puzzles and genealogy and reading and absolutely not wanting to do any big cleaning projects or gardening.

The truth is I'm irritable. I am.  I snip and snap and get frustrated easily and I know it's partly because I'm tired and partly due to a big decision that I've finally put to prayer because I cannot possibly make this sort of decision without relying on God's wisdom and direction.  And that's just one big thing on top of a lot of other little things that also require presence of mind and clear thinking that had already concerned me.

John has gone off to Sam's to mow the yard over there.  He purposely waited until the kids were in from school because I guess he hopes he'll get to see them.  Sometimes they come out to talk to him and other times they don't.  But he always stays there a little longer just in case they will come out.  I'm going to enjoy this couple of hours alone.  And probably think out a meal plan for the weekend and try to pre-plan for next week a little bit...but I am not feeling real inclined to work at much of anything just now.

Relax and enjoy your weekend.

I paid someone to come and clean up my yard because it didn't get done for over a year when my husband was ill. Also, I have arthritis and recovering from a dislocated shoulder. Plus I am 79 years old. So, please, don't drum me out of the corps for hiring someone!

I've been doing some of the fun stuff, admittedly only a little bit at a time. Two years ago, I killed a plant that was supposed to be invincible! But this year, it is coming up by the roots! I relocated it. I ran into a big rock at the bottom of the new hole and it took two times of filling the hole with water before I was able to loosen it enough to pop it out. I also had to replace two rhododendrons that did not survive the winter. I bought the new ones (a red and a pink) at Wal-Mart for $35 each. That's half the price I paid for the ones that died and these are bigger!

I'm doing a big cook-up this weekend for meals to freeze. Tonight, I made what we call goulash (hamburger, macaroni and tomato casserole), ate it for dinner, and froze enough for 3 more meals. I'm planning to make a boatload of chili in the Crock Pot and mix up meatloaf for two small meatloaves. All of these recipes (haha) use ground beef, which I got for $2.98 lb.

I think it is sweet that John hangs around Sam's for a little extra time, hoping to see and visit with the grandchildren.

My daughter is on vacation from her full-time job for the next two weeks, so I won't have much, if any, grandchildren duties. I have lots of plans for house, yard, and garden, but will need to pace myself. A day or two of intense work usually means a day or two of recovery...

I use a walker so I have a gal who comes in a couple times a month who does laundry and vacuums. I have a guy who mows. Money well spent. It keeps me in my home and not assisted living so a good investment. We do have to learn to respect our bodies or they fight back and it fights dirty!

We now pay for someone to do our yard. We both have asthma and having to try and do the yard in the horrible heat of summer after a full day of work is just too much.
