The Long Quiet: Day 10

The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, artist unknown

Genesis 2:8 Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden to the east, and there he placed the man he had made. 9 The Lord God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground--trees that were beautiful and produced delicious fruit.  In the middle of the garden, he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

15 The Lord God placed the man in the Gardens of Eden to tend and watch over it.  11 But the Lord God warned him, "You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden--except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die."

Eden.  A place of delight and pleasure.

I love the artwork here of the garden of Eden because of the abundance the artist portrayed.  An abundance of fruit, an abundance or creatures.  And all existing happily together.

Paradise.  Utopia.  This was where God placed man to live.

We were at home.

We gather things and bring them into our shelter to improve the security, comfort and beauty of our dwelling place.  It is our nature to try and recreate our own form of Eden, each in our own way, each to our own tastes.  We make home wherever we are.

In a garden, a cave, a tent, a house.  We long for home, a place of safety and comfort.  A place to rest without fear. A place where we can walk with God once more.  That's what we're really longing for.  Not just the abundance of things but the abundance of time with God. As it was, once long ago.
