What's in Season In December?

These are the foods in season for December.  I sometimes wonder what would come up if I searched for 'cheap produce' for this season of the year.  Not all of the food items listed below will be inexpensive, but they should be fresh and that counts for a lot.

Apples

Beets

Belgian Endive

Broccoli

Broccoli Rabe

Cabbage

Carrots

Cauliflower

Celery

Celery Root

Chard

Clementines

Cranberries

Curly Endive

Escarole

Fennel

Horseradish

Jerusalem Artichokes

Kale

Kohlrabi

Leeks

Oranges

Parsnips: The Spruce Eats suggests buying smaller parsnips which look like white carrots.  He says the larger ones often have a woody center that must be cut out of the parsnip.  All I've seen this year are quite large.

Pears

Pomegranate: information tells me that these are harvested in late October and can be bought fresh through the month of December.

Quince

Radicchio

Radish

Rutabaga: This are usually shipped in from Canada.  Because they are usually heavily waxed, they store well and are especially nice for cold weather meals.

Spinach: In the South we often can find fresh spinach in bundles that is grown within Georgia or Florida.  It prefers the cooler weather in our warm climate.

Sweet Potatoes: I know we see sweet potatoes year-round these days but in my childhood, we only saw them in the winter months.  They were usually harvested in late fall, just before and after the first frosts and were stored for winter eating.

Tangerines

Turnips

Winter Squash

Some foods store well and will be available most of the year, such as potatoes and onions, though they are harvested in the summer.
