Genesis 1: 14 Then God said, "Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days and years. 15 Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth." And that is what happened. 16 God made two great lights ---the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, 18 to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19 And evening passed, and morning came, marking the fourth day.
There is something unhurried about God's time and timing. Yes, we are given a limited number of hours in a day, and we are limited to a number of years on this earth, but through this reading I have the sense of measured movement.
I've been thinking about that a lot this week. The beauty of how God has organized time itself. Day and night, weeks (we see that in a little here). Months into seasons, seasons into years. And it is all governed by the light. The pull of the moon, the movement of the stars and the rising and setting of the sun. It's not chaotic or erratic. It's orderly and one thing follows another in a measured movement that never ceases.
Why am I hurrying along? Why am I in such a rush to get things done? Why am I increasingly anxious about the amount of time at my disposal? God has given me a measure of time to appreciate, enjoy, utilize, live.
